ORDER OF THE NEW HAVEN BOARD OF ALDERS DESIGNATING THE CORNER OF GRAND AVENUE AND HAVEN STREET “MALIK JONES CORNER” IN PERPETUITY, FOR HIS LOVE AND COMMITMENT TO RESIDENTS IN THE FAIR HAVEN NEIGHBORHOOD.

WHEREAS: Malik Jones, was a lifelong resident of New Haven, loving son; and
WHEREAS: on April 14th, 2007, Malik Jones was involved in a car chase from East Haven to New Haven; and
WHEREAS: ended with the unarmed young man shot to death; and
WHEREAS: his mother Emma Jones pursued the case in court; and
WHEREAS: the officer was not indicted by a grand jury; and
WHEREAS: Ms. Jones later won a verdict against the Town of East Haven and the officer when a jury ruled
the officer’s actions had violated her son’s civil rights; and
WHEREAS: through her continued effort and influence Ms. Jones efforts led to the creation of a statewide racial profiling team; and
WHEREAS: the City of New Haven’s Board of Alders passing an ordinance that created an independent
Civilian Review Board to investigate police misconduct; and
WHEREAS: in a major step forward the Civilian Review Board has subpoena power - the ability to
legally require witnesses, including police officers to testify or produce material evidence; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDERED BY the New Haven Board of Alders that in memory of Malik Jones
the corner of Grand Avenue and Haven Street be designated as “Malik Jones Corner” as an official and permanent reminder.
BE IT FURTHER ORDERED that the Department of transportation, Traffic and Parking is hereby directed and authorized to implement this Order.
