ORDER OF THE BOARD OF ALDERS DESIGNATING THE CORNER OF DICKERMAN STREET AND SPERRY STREET AS "RUTH HENDERSON CORNER" IN PERPETUITY, FOR HER LOVE, COMMITMENT, GREAT CONTRIBUTIONS AND SERVICE TO PEOPLE IN THE DIXWELL NEIGHBORHOOD.

WHEREAS: Mrs. Ruth Virgina (Tate) Henderson, is a longtime resident and supporter of the Dixwell community, living in New Haven since 1955, and

WHEREAS: Mrs. Henderson also known as "Grandma Ruth", is an inspiration to residents in the community, where she has dedicated herself to helping and giving in any capacity to her community; and

WHEREAS: she was married to the love of her life of 66 years, to the late Mr. Larry Henderson, and is the proud mother of five children, and a host of grandchildren; and

WHEREAS: she graduated from Grace Hopistal as the first African American EKG Technician, and she received her Master of Social Work from Springfield College; and

WHEREAS: she worked as a manager for Yale New Haven Hospital, retired from Our Kids within the Department of Social Services, New Haven Board of Education, Forbes House, Scantlebury/Hannah Gray Home, Cornerstone, Grant Street Partnership; and an entrepreneur of her own beauty supply store and

WHEREAS: she also served on the Dickerman Street Block Watch, Police Review Board, Yale New Haven Hospital Board Member, St Luke's Church, Wexler Grant Grandparents Program, Dixwell Community Management Team, City of New Haven Youth Commission, and the Commission on Equal Opportunities; and

WHEREAS: over the years, Ruth proudly claims to have 600 grandkids whom she has loved and supported countless young people on her home block of Dickerman Street as if they were her own.; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE ORDERED by the New Haven Board of Alders that in honor of her many contributions and great services to the Dixwell neighborhood and citywide, the corner of Dickerman Street and Sperry Street is designated as "Ruth Henderson Corner" in perpetuity, making her legacy ...
