ORDER CALLING FOR A WORKSHOP WITH THE NEW HAVEN CHIEF OF POLICE, NEW HAVEN POLICE DEPARTMENT UNION PRESIDENT, AND ALL RELEVANT OFFICIALS TO DISCUSS THE NEW HAVEN POLICE DEPARTMENT'S STAFF SHORTAGES

WHEREAS: The New Haven Police Department (NHPD) is called upon to respond to various issues, with ever-increasing demands and is facing dangerously low staffing levels; and

WHEREAS: the New Haven Police Department has been without a union contract for one year, making it challenging to hire and retain New Haven police officers; and

WHEREAS: the police staff shortage negatively impacts our neighborhoods' safety and quality of life; and

 

WHEREAS: it affects the economic development of our small businesses and low-income, working-class communities; and

 

WHEREAS: through a workshop, the Board of Alders can gain better insight into what our New Haven Police Department is facing; and

WHEREAS: to ask questions to the New Haven Chief of Police and other relevant officers to discuss what steps the NHPD is taking to recruit and retain a diverse law enforcement staff that includes women and people of all backgrounds; and

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT ORDERED the appropriate committee of the New Haven Board of Alders hold a workshop on this issue with the New Haven Chief of Police, New Haven Police Department Union President, and all relevant officials to discuss the New Haven Police Department's staff shortages, including police officer departures over the past 12 months, trends or patterns in police officer hiring, retention, and exit interviews.

BE IT FURTHER ORDERED that any other relevant entities deemed necessary be invited to attend the workshop to access all efforts made to address this critical issue.
