ORDER OF THE NEW HAVEN BOARD OF ALDERS DESIGNATING THE CORNER OF 1375 STATE STREET APOSTLE BERNICE GIBBS WAY, IN PERPETUITY, FOR HER LOVE, COMMITMENT, CONTRIBUTIONS, AND SERVICE TO RESIDENTS IN THE CEDAR HILL, FAIR HAVEN NEIGHBORHOODS, AND CITYWIDE.

WHEREAS: Apostle Bernice Gibbs is an inspiration to persons living in inner city neighborhoods where there are many challenges, yet she remains dedicated to improving the lives of children, adults, making sure they are well fed, safe; and
WHEREAS: Serving the community since 1987, Bernice Gibbs, has dedicated herself to helping and giving in many capacities to the community; and
WHEREAS: Realizing a need to do more and to help empower her community by creating childcare programs, summer programs, food panties, Christmas distributions; and
WHEREAS: Since 1991 in the Cedar Hill and Fair Haven communities working with the homeless, substance abuse populations, providing safe recovery options, case management assistance regarding employment and independent living skills; and
WHEREAS: Furthering her desire to do more for her community, partnered with Advanced Behavioral Health (ABH), the Connecticut Department of Correction (DOC), and other community programs in New Haven County; and
WHEREAS: Apostle Gibbs has shown great compassion throughout the community, helped countless people, secured weekly food donations, spent countless hours mentoring individuals, providing safe housing for the homeless and those individuals suffering from substance abuse; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDERED by the New Haven Board of Alders that in honor of her many contributions and service to the Cedar Hill and Fair Haven communities, the corner of 1375 State Street be designated as "Apostle Bernice Gibbs Way" making her legacy in New Haven stand as an official and permanent reminder of integrity, generosity, and dignity.
