ORDER OF THE NEW HAVEN BOARD OF ALDERS DESIGNATING THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF ORANGE STREET AND ELM STREET AS “LUCRETIA’S CORNER” TO HONOR LUCRETIA FOR HELPING BUILD THE CITY OF NEW HAVEN AND RECOGNIZE HER COMMITMENT TO HELPING THE ELDERLY.

WHEREAS: In the New Haven Colony shortly after its establishment in 1638, the first African of which there is any record is Lucretia.
WHEREAS: Lucretia was a slave of New Haven’s first governor, Theophilus Eaton at his estate, located on a plot of land which would now be bisected by the corner of Orange Street and Elm Street.
WHEREAS: Lucretia was a significant behind-the-scenes person in helping to build progress in the domesticity of New Haven and the public domain she experienced, from its beginning;
WHEREAS: Lucretia, in her old age, using whatever limited opportunities came her way, courageously expressed the need for better treatment of the elderly;
WHEREAS: To honor Lucretia and her contributions in helping to build the City of New Haven, please see the necessary petitions, paperwork, and notifications to satisfy the requirements of Section 18-2 of the General Code of Ordinances regarding the procedures for corner naming; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDERED by the New Haven Board of Alders that in honor of Lucretia’s contributions to the establishment of the City of New Haven, the northeast corner of Orange Street and Elm Street is designated as “Lucretia’s Corner” in perpetuity making her legacy in New Haven officially permanent;
BE IT FURTHER ORDERED that the Department of Traffic and Parking is hereby directed and authorized to implement this order post haste.
