WHEREAS: on January 4, 2021, the Board of Alders' Working Group on Racism as a Public Health Issue submitted its final report and recommendations to the Board of Alders.
AND WHEREAS: the working group, co-chaired by Alder Darryl J. Brackeen, Jr., conducted meetings and hearings throughout 2020 and early 2021 in order to create its report which included several dozen recommendations including:
? COVID-19 testing of all New Haven Public Schools students and staff to support education of all children in New Haven and prioritize vaccine, outreach, distribution and education.
? Rename the city's Affirmative Action Commission as the Commission on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with funding of $75,000.
? Expand the New Haven Health Department's "Health in All Policies" program and assess Yale New Haven Hospital's Community Benefit requirements to ensure that health improvement funds are strategically flow into Black and Brown communities.
? Support for development of Black and Brown businesses, as well as expanding cash assistance under Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).
? Continue implementing recommendations of the Alders' Affordable Housing Task Force and support statewide advocacy efforts to reduce segregation by creating more affordable housing in affluent suburban towns.
? Reduce food apartheid and insecurity, both of which are related to low-cost and low-nutrient foods such as sugar-sweetened beverages which are disproportionately marketed to Black and Hispanic/Latinx communities causing negative health outcomes like obesity, hypertension)...
