ORDER CONCERNING DESIGNATING THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF COLLEGE STREET AND ELM STREET AS "JOHN WILHELM CORNER" IN PERPETUITY, FOR HIS LEADERSHIP IN THE LABOR MOVEMENT, HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO COMMUNITY ORGANIZING, AND HIS LASTING SERVICE TO THE CITY OF NEW HAVEN.
WHEREAS: Mr. John W. Wilhelm is widely recognized for his leadership in the labor movement and for his organizing work connected to Yale's unions in New Haven; and
WHEREAS: historical reporting and community accounts have described Mr. Wilhelm's role in strengthening Yale-affiliated union locals and contributing to the broader "town-gown" organizing ecosystem that has shaped civic life in the City of New Haven; and
WHEREAS: through his work on behalf of organized labor, Mr. Wilhelm helped advance the rights, dignity, and collective voice of working people, while reinforcing the importance of solidarity, fairness, and advocacy in the workplace and throughout the community; and
WHEREAS: Mr. Wilhelm's contributions extended beyond labor organizing alone, as his leadership also helped strengthen relationships between institutions and neighborhoods and supported a deeper connection between the university community and the residents of New Haven; and
WHEREAS: he is being honored for his lasting contributions to working people, community organizing, and the City's rich town-gown labor history, as well as for the impact he made in the lives of the many individuals whom he coached, encouraged, and inspired; and
WHEREAS: the southeast corner of College Street and Elm Street is a fitting and symbolic location to recognize Mr. Wilhelm's enduring legacy and his contributions to the labor and civic history of the City of New Haven; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE ORDERED by the New Haven Board of Alders that, in honor of his many contributions and great services to the City of New Haven, the southeast corner of College Street and Elm Street is hereby designated as "John Wilhelm Corner" in perpetuity, so that his legacy may stand...
