WHEREAS, the college graduation marks an important milestone for students; and,
WHEREAS, Yale University plans to host its Commencement ceremony and School of Medicine Commencement on Monday, May 19th; and,
WHEREAS, since COVID, commencement activities have moved outdoors to Cross Campus; and,
WHEREAS, this pivot has altered the logistics for the event; and,
WHEREAS, the scope of the School of Medicine Commencement has grown and now requires
road closures; and,
WHEREAS, Class Day, which occurs on Sunday also has a significant footprint which requires the closure of College Street to facilitate safe pedestrian egress; and,
WHEREAS, the City through its department/divisions of Emergency Management; Police; Transportation, Traffic and Parking and Chief Administrator's Office have reviewed this change; and,
WHEREAS, the traditional rolling closures associated with graduation will continue to allow for safe crossings of the roadways that remain open which shall include York, Elm and Chapel Street; and,
WHEREAS, working with the University it has been agreed to promote public safety and to minimize disruptions to downtown traffic the closures of College Street and High Street shall be recommended; and,
