ORDER OF THE BOARD OF ALDERS OF THE CITY OF NEW HAVEN AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR OF THE CITY OF NEW HAVEN TO APPLY FOR AND ACCEPT FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY/ASSISTANCE TO FIREFIGHTERS GRANT (AFG) FUNDING IN THE AMOUNT OF $1,739,954.86 TO REPLACE AND UPGRADE RADIO EQUIPMENT

WHEREAS, the City of New Haven through its Department of Fire Services is responsible for containing and extinguishing fires for the 20 square miles boundaries of the City of New Haven; and
WHEREAS, the FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY (FEMA) ASSISTANCE TO FIREFIGHTERS GRANT (AFG) offers funds and other resources to communities to aid local departments in fire prevention and response; and
WHEREAS, the Fire Department is requesting funds from FEMA/AFG to replace and upgrade essential radio equipment, ensuring clearer, more reliable communication during emergency operations; and
WHEREAS, modernized portable radios with advanced features will substantially improve firefighter safety, enhance rescue coordination, and support more effective fire suppression efforts across the City of New Haven and its mutual-aid partners; and
WHEREAS, the full project budget is $1,913,950.35 and as a condition of accepting these funds, the City is required to contribute non-federal matching funds equal to or greater than 10 percent of the federal award, totaling $173,995.49 with the federal share providing funding in the amount of $1,739,954.86; and
WHEREAS, the Fire Department is seeking alternative methods of funding and partnerships to alleviate the burden of the taxpayer; and
WHEREAS, the Board of Alders of the City of New Haven supports efforts to provide and enhance public safety for its firefighters and its community by ensuring that necessary and up to date equipment is put in use whenever possible.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDERED that the Board of Alders of the City of New Haven hereby authorize the Mayor of the City of New Haven to apply for and accept Federal Emergency Management Agency...
