ORDINANCE AMENDMENT OF THE NEW HAVEN BOARD OF ALDERS TO APPROPRIATING ORDINANCE # 1 RECLASSIFYING ONE POLICE MECHANIC TO LEAD MECHANIC WITHIN THE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND RECLASSIFYING BENEFITS ADMINISTRATOR TO BENEFITS OPERATIONS MANAGER WITHIN THE CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICE DIVISION OF HUMAN RESOURCES

WHEREAS, Article VIII, Section 3 of the City Charter and Section 2-383 (1) of the Code of General Ordinances require the approval of the Board of Alders for the transfer of funds within the General Fund Operating Budget, as adopted; and

WHEREAS, Section 2-386 of the Code of General Ordinances requires approval of the Board of Alders to create a position not included in the budget as adopted, or to reclassify an existing and included position; and

Section 1:
WHEREAS, a new vacancy occurred in July with the retirement of Police Mechanic Thomas Castelli; and

WHEREAS, the Police Department has recognized the benefit of recognizing a Lead within the classification of Mechanic to assign additional responsibilities and take responsibility in the absence of the Superintendent of Police Vehicles; and

WHEREAS, the Position of Lead Mechanic Fire already exists within the Local 421/71 agreement and reflects similar roles and responsibilities to those anticipated for the title of Lead Mechanic Police; and

WHEREAS, the Police Department is seeking approval to reclassify the following position:

Current Information
#5570 Police Mechanic, Local 424/71, Range 7 / Step 2 $77,697

Revised Information
Lead Mechanic Police, Local 424/71, Range 8 / Step 2 $84,887; and

WHEREAS, the Police Department has lapsed salary from the vacancy of the position since July, exceeding the $7,190 difference thereby not requiring a change to the total appropriation in the Police salary account; and

Section 2:
WHEREAS, a new vacancy is anticipated with the retirement of the Benefits Administrator on October 2nd; and
