ORDER OF THE BOARD OF ALDERS OF THE CITY OF NEW HAVEN AUTHORIZING THE DEPARTMENT OF POLICE SERVICES TO ACCEPT A DONATION FROM THE DEMAND ZERO IN THE AMOUNT OF $9,500 TO PURCHASE A REPLACEMENT K9.

WHEREAS, the City of New Haven through its Department of Police Service (NHPD) seeks to promote community policing strategies that maintain public safety; and
WHEREAS, Demand Zero is a nonprofit organization founded by Lisa Deane following the tragic loss of her son, Joe, who died from a fentanyl overdose in 2018. The organization focuses on educating parents and children about the dangers of fentanyl and providing resources to law enforcement to combat drug trafficking. Lisa has been actively involved in various initiatives, including donating drug detection dogs to police departments and creating educational materials for schools; and
WHEREAS, Demand Zero has offered to donate $9,500 to purchase a K9 for the NHPD K9 Unit; and
WHEREAS, one of the NHPD K9s is retiring and there is a need to maintain the number of K9s that support various purposes within the K9 Unit; and
WHEREAS, this donation will support the purchase of a replacement K9 to take over the vacancy of the retiring K9; and
WHEREAS, the NHPD is grateful for these gifts.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT ORDERED that the Board of Alders of the City of New Haven supports resources that benefit the NHPD; and
BE IT FURTHER ORDERED that the Board of Alders of the City of New Haven authorizes the Mayor of the City of New Haven to accept this gift of $9,500 for the funding to purchase a replacement K9 for our K9 unit.
