RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF ALDERS OF THE CITY OF NEW HAVEN AUTHORIZING THE PARKS DEPARTMENT TO APPLY FOR AND ACCEPT $30,000.00 FROM THE CONNECTICUT DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION TO ASSIST WITH THE ANALYSIS AND MAINTENANCE OF THE CITY’S TREE CANOPY.

WHEREAS, in 2009, recognizing that the City of New Haven (“the City”) was removing more trees that it was planting, the City embarked on a 10,000 tree campaign with the goal of planting more trees than are removed each year; and
WHEREAS, in 2021, the City adopted a new tree inventory software system and began collecting data on all street trees at the rate of 20% per year to determine maintenance and budget needs, as well as species distribution, tree condition and risk; and
WHEREAS, risk mitigation and tree maintenance are high priority, skilled work that reduces city liabilities, but the current need exceeds Parks staff and budget capacity; and
WHEREAS, the funds from this grant will increase urban forestry goals of reducing risk while increasing benefits; and
WHEREAS, these tree plantings will increase equitable access to urban tree canopy and the associated human health, environmental and economic benefits in disadvantaged communities.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Alders of the City of New Haven hereby authorizes the Mayor of the City of New Haven to apply for and accept up to $30,000.00 from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the Board of Alders of the City of New Haven that the Mayor of the City of New Haven or their designee is authorized to sign any associated agreements, agreements with contractors, and other documents, any of which may include indemnification provisions and which may have a term of longer than one year, that the Mayor deems desirable or necessary, including any subsequent amendments to agreements regarding this grant.
