ORDER OF THE BOARD OF ALDERS OF THE CITY OF NEW HAVEN AUTHORIZING THE CITY OF NEW HAVEN (MAYOR OR CONTROLLER) TO ENTER INTO A 10-YEAR LEASE AGREEMENT FROM JULY 1, 2026 TO JUNE 30, 2036 (WITH OPTIONS TO RENEW) WITH CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY ACTION, INC REGARDING THE PROPERTY AT 124 SYLVAN AVENUE, NEW HAVEN, CT

WHEREAS, Section 2-376 (A) of the Code of General Ordinances dictates that “Unless expressly authorized by law or by vote of the Board of Alders, the city shall not be bound by any contract executed after one (1) year from the date thereof”; and

 

WHEREAS, the property located at 124 Sylvan Avenue, New Haven, CT (the “Property”) is currently occupied by Christian Community Action, Inc. (“CCA”); and

 

WHEREAS, in 2013, the Board of Alders approved lease agreement (Contract #A10-0102) between the CCA for the Property and such lease expired by its terms in 2023; and

 

WHEREAS, CCA has continuously occupied the Property as a month-to-moth tenant; and

 

WHEREAS, CCA operates a family shelter at the Property, providing vital services to vulnerable families; and

 

WHEREAS, CCA has the opportunity to apply for a Connecticut Department of Housing grant, but the grant requires that the applicant either owns the property or have ten (10) years remaining in their lease; and,

 

WHEREAS, a new lease agreement is needed to ensure that CCA can continue providing shelter services to families and for CCA to obtain a grant from the Connecticut Department of Housing for capital improvements to the Property.

 

NOW THEREFORE BE IT ORDERED that the Board of Alders of the City of New Haven hereby authorizes the Mayor of the City of New Haven or Controller to enter a new ten (10) year lease agreement with Christian Community Action, Inc. effective from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2036, with three (3) options to renew the lease for additional five-year terms each, upon mutual agreement between the City of New Haven and Christian Community Action.
