ORDER OF THE NEW HAVEN BOARD OF ALDERS DESIGNATING THE CORNER OF ARGYLE STREET AND DIXWELL AVENUE AS "JAMES WALKER CORNER" IN PERPETUITY, FOR HIS LOVE, COMMITMENT, CONTRIBUTIONS AND SERVICE TO PEOPLE IN THE DIXWELL NEIGHBORHOOD.

WHEREAS, Mr. James Walker, a beacon of inspiration to residents in the community, has dedicated himself to helping and giving in any capacity to his community;
WHEREAS, for over 20 years, his unwavering dedication as a community social worker, his development of the I Believe in Me Corporation (BIMEC) on the corner of Dixwell Avenue and Argyle Street, to fulfill his mission to change the life of the neighborhood by reaching one neighbor at a time; and his leadership;
WHEREAS, under his leadership, Mr. Walker has been a cornerstone of the Dixwell/Newhallville neighborhoods, engaged in yearly community beautification projects, provides community service through a food pantry, and oversees neighborhood surveillance to keep our community safe;
WHEREAS, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he provided supportive projects and residential programs for men and women in need of housing; and
WHEREAS, over the years, Mr. Walker has continued to provide programs and services to empower the Dixwell/Newhallville neighborhood families through education, training, and cultural awareness, despite limited state or local funding.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDERED by the New Haven Board of Alders that in honor of his many contributions and excellent services to the Dixwell neighborhood and citywide, the corner of Argyle Street and Dixwell Avenue is designated as "James Walker Corner" in perpetuity, making his legacy in New Haven stand as an official and permanent reminder of integrity, love, generosity, and dignity.
BE IT FURTHER ORDERED that the Department of Transportation, Traffic and Parking is hereby directed and authorized to implement this order.
