ORDER OF THE BOARD OF ALDERS OF THE CITY OF NEW HAVEN AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR OF THE CITY OF NEW HAVEN TO APPLY FOR AND ACCEPT UP TO $614,993 FROM THE FFY26 DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE COPS: SCHOOL VIOLENCE PREVENTION PROGRAM (SVPP) TO ENHANCE SCHOOL SECURITY AND ACCEPT, EXECUTE AND IF NECESSARY, MODIFY ALL RELATED DOCUMENTS, CONTRACTS, AND SUCH INSTRUMENTS AS DEEMED NECESSARY.

WHEREAS, the City and Board of Education convene a regular School Security Taskforce which includes Board of Education Administration, School Security, City Emergency Management, Police, Fire, Public Safety Communications and other stakeholders; and

 

WHEREAS, the group focuses on all hazards review, planning and projects to optimize school safety and security; and

 

WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, through the School Violence Prevention Programing, offers funding to implement evidence based programing to improve security at schools and on schools grounds; and

 

WHEREAS, the taskforce has reviewed the opportunity and working collaboratively with the IT department has prioritized a project to upgrade and supplement exterior cameras and keycard access points on the exterior of buildings to increase multi-jurisdictional access and awareness and improve overall security; and

 

WHEREAS, these upgrades are necessary as existing equipment nears the end of useful life and as additional access points are determined important for responses; and

 

WHEREAS, grant funds would leverage existing Board of Education Capital Funding which would be used for these facility security upgrades.

 

NOW THEREFORE BE IT ORDERED that the Board of Alders of the City of New Haven hereby authorizes the Mayor of the City of New Haven to apply for and accept up to $614,993 from the FFY26 Department of Justice COPS: School Violence Prevention Program (SVPP) to enhance school security and accept, execute and if necessary, modify all related documents, contracts, and such instruments as deemed necessary
