ORDER OF THE BOARD OF ALDERS DESIGNATING THE CORNER OF GREENWOOD STREET AND LEGION AVENUE AS “BISHOP JAMES AND PASTOR TANZELLA PERKINS CORNER” IN PERPETUITY, TO HONOR THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF BISHOP JAMES PERKINS AND HIS WIFE, PASTOR TANZELLA PERKINS, WHO FAITHFULLY FOUNDED AND SERVED THE MT. CALVARY HOLY CHURCH REVIVAL CENTER

WHEREAS: Bishop James Perkins opened the Mt. Calvary Holy Church Revival Center in 1972 and faithfully served it until his passing in 1991; and

 

WHEREAS: subsequently, in 1993, his wife, Pastor Tanzella Perkins was installed as Senior Pastor at Mt. Calvary, carrying on the tradition of providing outstanding spiritual guidance and contributing greatly to the life of the Church and the community; and

 

WHEREAS: the Church thrived under the leadership of Pastor Tanzella Perkins, as she was honored in 2008 with a “Living Legend Award” for her faithful service, prior to her passing in 2010; and

 

WHEREAS: Bishop James Perkins and Pastor Tanzella Perkins were both humble and unselfish shepherds to their spiritual flock, giving wise counsel and performing good works that helped countless people in showing great compassion to the congregation and to the community-at-large for many years; and

 

WHEREAS: they both showed love and concern for the spiritual growth and wellbeing of those in the Church and throughout the community and always remained faithful to their call of service toward their fellow man; and

 

WHEREAS: it is fitting that the corner near Mt. Calvary Holy Church Revival Center be so named as a tribute to the memory and outstanding contributions made by these two great founders and spiritual leaders who had such a positive impact over several decades on the lives of so many individuals at the Church and across the City of New Haven; and

 

WHEREAS: the admiration and gratitude felt for Bishop James Perkins and Pastor Tanzella Perkins is evidenced by the outpouring of support from residents who completed the necessary petition and paperwork to satisfy the requirements of Section 18-2 of the General Code of Ordinances regarding the procedure for corner naming.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDERED by the New Haven Board of Alders that to honor the life and legacy of Bishop James Perkins and his wife, Pastor Tanzella Perkins, the corner of Greenwood Street and Legion Avenue is hereby designated as “Bishop James and Pastor Tanzella Perkins Corner” in perpetuity.

 

BE IT FURTHER ORDERED that the Department of Transportation, Traffic and Parking is hereby directed and authorized to implement this order.
