ORDER TO READ AND FILE THE COMMUNICATION CALLING FOR A PUBLIC HEARING WITH ALL APPROPRIATE CITY OFFICIALS AND VENDOR SUPERVISORS TO DISCUSS THE CURRENT STATUS OF THE CITY’S BIKE SHARE PROGRAM.

body

WHEREAS, in February 2018, Bike New Haven, the city’s short-term bike rental program, was launched with 10 stations and 100 bicycles by vendor New Haven Smart Mobility in agreement with the city; and

WHEREAS, the bike share program has grown rapidly, and now includes 30 active stations with one additional “virtual station” for drop off and pick up at the State Street Station, and another 10 additional stations that have been approved but are not yet constructed, representing the full complement of stations under the existing five-year contract; and

WHEREAS, with such fast expansion by vendor New Haven Smart Mobility, the public is very interested in all related developments, including a possible merging with the Yale bike share system, procedures for implementing future stations, as well as advertising signage content, dimensions and placement; and

WHEREAS, a public hearing would give opportunity to the Director of Transportation, Traffic and Parking, Bike New Haven management, and the New Haven Smart Mobility chief executive to provide an update on Bike New Haven, and to generally discuss the current status and future plans for the city’s new bike share program.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDERED that the New Haven Board of Alders conduct a public hearing with all appropriate individuals invited, including Transportation, Traffic and Parking Director Douglas Hausladen, Bike New Haven Program Manager Carolyn Lusch, and Carlos Pujol, Chief Executive Officer of New Haven Smart Mobility, to provide the latest information on the status of the city’s bike share program, while engaging in a broad discussion of all related issues.
